History of the North Shepparton Community & Learning Centre

| 1982 |
Centre opened at 47 Packham Street courtesy Goulburn Valley Hospital. The then Mayor of Shepparton Cr. William B. Hunter officially opened the Centre on 23rd February 1982.

| 1984 |
Ministry of Housing provided the present Centre at 58 Olympic Avenue. T.A.F.E. apprentices & teachers built extra room at rear of Centre for Child Care, meetings, Maternal Health Nurse. Classes expanded from Craft to Adult Education, 1:1 Literacy.

| 1985 |
Vacation Care now supported by Community Services Vic.

| 1987 |
Multi purpose room completed. G. V. Tenants Group used our office to 1990 when they obtained their own premises.

| 1990 |
The Community Room of the Phyliss Newton Villas has provided much needed space for Education classes. Occasional Child Care received support from C.S.V. and began 6 hours per week.

| 1991 |
5000 Adults & 1000 Children are now using the Community Centre, plus phone assistance and referrals.

| 1992 |
Introduction of Personal Development and self-esteem classes, numbers using the Centre Increasing.

| 1994 |
Occasional Child Care now conducted at Patricia Smith Kindergarten because of the Increased demand and our room now too small. Adults using the Centre now number almost 10,000 - children 2500 with greater demand for personal referral either direct or by phone.

| 1995 |
Centre registered as a provider of the Certificate of General Education for Adults. Classes more educational in nature, target group being the unemployed and people who have had limited education opportunities. (1994 Census of N.S.C.L.C. showed 33% who use the Centre are unemployed).

| 1995 |
November - Opening of 2nd Centre at 56 Olympic Avenue by Cr. W. Hunter. This Centre to be the “Learning Centre” for Adult Education.

| 1996 |
Building of “The Shed” with assistance from Shepparton Kiwanis, Justice Department, Angry Anderson. “Shed” for youth of area to learn basic trade skills.

| 1997 |
Opening of new occasional Child Care room at Patricia Smith Children’s Centre. A joint venture between the Centre and the City of Greater Shepparton. Room required for 21 children. Financial assistance from Human Services Vic.

| 1999 |
Building of toilet block, including toilet for disabled at Learning Centre. Assistance from Human Services Victoria and Hume Regional Council of Adult Education.

| 2000 |
Obtained 54 Olympic Avenue used as a Youth Centre.
|
| 2001 |
Youth Group commenced in March and Woodturning Program Commenced in the beginning of 2001.
|
| 2003 |
A new colour bond fence was completed at 54 Olympic Avenue in preparation of the future community Garden Project.
